The Expedition

Julen’s Zerow-Emission journey began in summer 2020. Together with his friend Jonathan he cycled from Paris (France) to Portimao (Portugal). In Portimao, Julen prepared for his row across the Atlantic Ocean to Florida – a journey that took him 131 days to complete. Right now, Julen then cycled from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) and finished the 14.000km journey in Pittsburgh – causing 0 emissions!

  • Zerow-Emission adventures have the following characteristics:

Emission-Free

Only means of transport that produce zero carbon emissions are employed.

Human-Powered

Progress is made through human power only, without the help of engines or sails.

Self-Reliant

Zerow-Emission expeditions are fully unsupported from start to finish line.

Together with my friend Jonathan, I officially started the Zerow-Emission journey in early July 2020 with my bicycle from Paris. From Paris we headed towards the French Atlantic coast south of Bordeaux and passed through the famous surfing town of Biarritz. Once we crossed the border to Spain, we entered the Cordillera Cantábrica with its stunning mountain sceneries. A lot of nights we were able to camp on the cliffs right next to the ocean, while spending the days with climbing many stunningly beautiful mountain passes. After 18 days of cycling, we reached our biggest waypoint: Santiago de Compostela – the legendary endpoint of the Camino de Santiago. We enjoyed a cold beer and the scenery of the city for a couple of hours, but quickly went back to business and passed the border to Portugal. In Portugal we passed through the beautiful cities of Porto and Lisbon, as well as the famous big wave spot Nazaré. After almost getting arrested by the Portuguese police for cycling over a bridge that apparently was a highway and forbidden for cyclist, we made good progress and reached the Algarve after 27 days of cycling. Jonathan and I spent some well-deserved vacation days in Lagos, before I cycled the last 15km by myself to the Marina de Portimao from where I would 1 year later start my row across the Atlantic Ocean.

2.5 million oar strokes

131 days at sea

9.200 kilometers

Julen became the youngest person to ever row solo from mainland Europe to mainland North America

from Portugal to Florida - 9.200 km by Rowing Boat

When:  29th of November 2021 – 17th of April 2022
Distance covered:  9.200 km
Duration:  131 days, 9 hours and 30 minutes at sea  (8 days spent in the Canaries for repairs)
Starting Point:  Marina de Portimao, Algarve (Portugal)
End Point:  Lighthouse Point Marina, Hillsboro Beach (Florida, USA)
Status:  Completed

On my way across the Atlantic Ocean, I had to face up to 6 meter seas, storms, equipment failures, flooded cabins, headwinds, strong currents and many more obstacles. After 131 days, however, I set foot again on American mainland after rowing unsupported and solo from Portugal to Florida. My route took me through the beautiful and shallow Bahama Bank as well as through large shipping lanes and some of the remotest places on our planet in the middle of the ocean. In order to arrive safely in Florida, I made 2.5 million oar strokes and covered a distance of 5.041 nautical miles (= 9.200 kilometers). Thereby, I have now become the youngest person to ever row from Europe to North America as well as the youngest person to solo-row more than 5.000 nautical miles on open water.

The third and last leg of the Zerow-Emission journey will took me from Fort Lauderdale (Florida) to Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania). After the ocean row, I rested my body for six weeks and made sure to put on a little bit of weight after losing many kilos at sea. The route up the US East Coast took me through 7 different states: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. After 12 days of cycling more than 2.000km I arrived in downtown Pittsburgh and successfully finished my human-powered journey from Paris to Pittsburgh.
